The MPO file format was developed by the Camera & Imaging Products Association (CIPA) as a raister image format for the use of certain digital cameras with multiple stereoscopic lenses. These .mpo files contain two electronic images in JPG format, and may also include metadata details. The .mpo file extension stands for Multi Picture Object. This file format allows two 2D images to be placed side by side in a single .mpo file, in order to be viewed as a single 3D image. Digital cameras with two stereoscopic lenses that use the MPO file format for its image output files include models under the Fujifilm FinePix Real 3D series. These MPO files can be opened and viewed through the use of certain digital image viewers and editing applications. Using an unsupported image viewer will only display one of the two JPG images in the MPO file, which is usually the image on the left. In order to properly view the digital image content of these MPO files, Adobe Photoshop CC, StereoPhoto Maker, STOIK Imaging Imagic, MPO Explorer and a few others can be used.
