What is a MNG file?

A .MNG file is a Multiple-image Network Graphics Bitmap/anim file.

Multiple-image Network Graphics Bitmap/anim (.MNG) is an image file format for storing animated or multi-image graphics. It was created by the PNG Development Group to build on the capabilities of PNG (Portable Network Graphics) by allowing multiple images or frames in one file. MNG supports animations, slide shows, sprites (smaller images that move within frames), palette updates, transparency, reuse of image data (delta-encoding), and can include either lossless or lossy compression via embedded PNG or JNG single-image streams.

Full MNG files are written under specification version 1.0 (officially published January 31, 2001), with defined subsets MNG-LC (Low Complexity) and MNG-VLC (Very Low Complexity) for simpler implementations. A typical workflow: animation software or tools generate a sequence of frames or layers, encode them in PNG or JNG, then wrap them all in an MNG file. Viewers who implement the full or a subset spec read the file, decode each PNG/JNG stream, and render frames according to built-in animation timing, sprite or layer placement.

The file is identified by a binary signature at the start: the first bytes are hex 8A 4D 4E 47 0D 0A 1A 0A, followed by an MHDR chunk which establishes the size, timing, and framing structure.
