LZMA File Type

- The quick facts

What are LZMA files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a LZMA file or just wondering what they contain? We explain what these files are used for and show you software that we know can open or otherwise handle your files.

What is a LZMA file?

A .LZMA file is a LZMA compressed file.

A file with the .lzma file extension has been compressed (reduced in size) with the Lempel-Ziv-Markov chain algorithm. LZMA files are similar to other compression algorithms like ZIP that compress the file's data to save disk space. Still, LZMA compression is known to provide faster decompression times compared to other algorithms.

You will need to decompress the file to restore it to its original format.
