LMT File

What are LMT files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a LMT file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your LMT files.

What is a LMT file?

A .LMT file is a RPG Maker 2000/2003 Map Tree file.

RPG Maker 2000/2003 Map Tree files encode how a game's maps are organised and what properties they have, such as map names, music, background settings, and encounter behavior. They are created by the RPG Maker 2000 and RPG Maker 2003 tools (RPG_RT.exe) and stored in the file typically named RPG_RT.lmt in a game's Data folder. The editor references that tree to display maps in its hierarchy and to load shared metadata needed even when individual map files (.lmu) aren't opened.

These files do not contain full map data such as tile layouts, but rather global map descriptors: parent-child relationships between maps, the display order, map types, music or backdrop inheritance rules, event defaults, encounter groups, save/escape settings, and starting points for the player, boat, ship, and airship. Other files (such as MapXXXX.lmu) store the actual individual map content.

Internally the format begins with the ASCII signature ".LcfMapTree" prefixed by a length byte (0x0A, meaning 10), which acts as a magic header to identify the file. After that is serialized map information in "chunks" using a variable-length integer (BER/VLQ-style) system. These sections hold optional attributes: entries that are omitted if they match default values. At the end there is a list that defines tree ordering plus a number indicating which map was last active in the editor.
