LMU File
What are LMU files and how to open them
Are you having problems opening a LMU file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your LMU files.
What is a LMU file?
LMU files have multiple uses, and RPG Maker 2000/2003 Map is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.
RPG Maker 2000/2003 Map
RPG Maker 2000/2003 Map files with extension .LMU store the layout of a single map used in a 2D role-playing game project built with RPG Maker 2000 or RPG Maker 2003. A map file holds all the data needed to reconstruct the game world's terrain tiles, the selected tileset (known as the ChipSet), the map's dimensions, and embedded event objects like interactive NPCs, triggers, or special terrain effects. When you browse a game project, a map called something like Map0001.lmu corresponds to one of the game's physical areas (towns, dungeons, outdoors).
These files are generated by RPG Maker 2000 or 2003 when the map is saved in the game editor. Changes you make in the editor - adjusting map width or height (in tiles), selecting which ChipSet image is used, placing terrain tiles for each layer, and programming events - are all recorded in the LMU file. At runtime the game engine reads the file to display the map, determine character movement and collisions, and handle any events. Map tree data (which map goes where, what background music plays, etc.) is kept in a separate file, RPG_RT.lmt.
Technically the file begins with a header string to identify it: a length byte (commonly 0x0A) followed by ASCII "LcfMapUnit", which marks it as the LMU map-data format.
