JPX File
What are JPX files and how to open them
Are you having problems opening a JPX file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your JPX files.
What is a JPX file?
JPX files have multiple uses, and JPEG 2000 Image is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.
JPEG 2000 Image
Files that contain the .jpx file extension normally store compressed bitmap images. The JPEG2000 Core Coding System uses a wavelet compression algorithm instead of the common DCT compression method that is used with standard JPEG images. The JPEG2000 file format can be used to store either lossy or lossless compressed JPEG images and provides the user with better quality and smaller file size than the traditional JPG image files.
Normally JPEG 2000 images are saved with the JP2 file extension, but sometimes JPX is used instead.

We have identified four JPX openers that are compatible with this specific type of JPX file.

All known file formats using extension .JPX
While JPEG 2000 Image is a popular type of JPX-file, we know of 3 different uses of the .JPX file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.
JAlbum Image Info
JAlbum Image Info (.JPX) is a data file produced by the jAlbum program that stores metadata and editing settings specific to individual images within a project. These files are created and maintained by jAlbum whenever users apply adjustments like brightness, contrast, rotation, captions, comments, or specify custom rendering parameters; the information helps jAlbum apply those edits consistently when exporting or regenerating web albums. The .JPX file is not an image itself but operates alongside the original images, controlling how they are displayed in the album.
When running a jAlbum project, user edits and image display preferences are written into a small .JPX text file inside a hidden control folder. This happens automatically when edits are made through jAlbum's Edit or Explore views. When the album is generated, jAlbum reads these .JPX files to include captions, descriptions, rotation, brightness, strength, gamma, and other visual settings in the output HTML or template pages. Removing or altering a .JPX file can cause those personalized edits to be lost or reset to defaults.
Technically, the file begins with a visible character "[`" at byte offset 0 and contains specific keywords such as BRIGHTNESSTRAFOS, COLORCORRECTION, ROTATION, STRENGTH, GAMMA, COMMENT, DESCRIPTION among others, acting as field identifiers for the photo settings. There is no image encoded - only human-readable properties.

JBuilder Project
A JBuilder project (.JPX) file is a text file in XML format used by Embarcadero's JBuilder development environment to record the setup of a Java software project. It stores the definitions of which files and directories are part of the project, settings that apply to the project as a whole (such as class libraries, deployment paths, source output paths, backup locations), and environment configuration needed for building and running the project.
JBuilder itself writes and updates the .JPX file whenever project structure or properties change - for example when you add or remove source files, modify library references, set output directories, or change build/deployment settings. When you open the project in JBuilder, it reads the .JPX to reconstruct the project tree, apply the saved configuration, and know how to build or run the code. The file is not meant for manual editing, though it is human-readable XML.
A technical indicator of this format is that .JPX files begin with the typical XML declaration (), include a comment like , and contain XML elements defining project properties such as source paths, output paths, libraries, class listings, and working directory settings.
