JPC File

What are JPC files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a JPC file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your JPC files.

What is a JPC file?

A .JPC file is a JPEG-2000 Code Stream Bitmap file.

JPEG-2000 Code Stream Bitmap (.JPC) is a form of compressed image file that holds the raw codestream from the JPEG 2000 Part 1 standard. It stores image data in a highly efficient, wavelet-based format capable of both lossy and lossless compression. The image inside can be grayscale or color (such as RGB or YCbCr), and quality, resolution, or precision can often be increased progressively from the same file.

Files with this format are typically generated by JPEG 2000 encoders (software or hardware) when the codestream is used by itself, without the JP- or JP2-style file wrapper that adds metadata like color space, resolution, and rights information. Users open or decode .JPC files with a JPEG 2000 decoder, which reads the codestream markers and header segments to reconstruct the full raster image.

Technically, a .JPC file begins with a Start Of Codestream marker segment (SOC), contains a main header with image size, component count, bit depth, resolution, and tile structure, followed by codestream data (including tile-parts and data packets), and ends with an End Of Codestream marker segment (EOC). One way files are identified is by the byte sequence 0xFF 4F FF 51 at the very beginning.
