What are JDX files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a JDX file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your JDX files.

What is a JDX file?

A .JDX file is a JCAMP-DX Format file.

JCAMP-DX is a standard format specified by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC, inherited from JCAMP) for storing and exchanging spectral data in analytical chemistry, such as infrared (IR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), mass spectrometry (MS), ultraviolet-visible (UV/Vis), Raman, ion mobility, electron magnetic resonance (EMR), and circular dichroism spectra. It is used when a spectrometer or data source needs to save both the measurement points (e.g. wavelength vs intensity) and descriptive metadata (instrument settings, sample information, etc.) in a vendor-independent, human- and machine-readable form.

The format is produced by spectrometers or data-acquisition software that implement the JCAMP-DX protocols. After creation, other programs (for visualization, analysis, archiving or publication) read and plot the spectral curves, interpret the metadata, convert between techniques, or store the spectral data in databases. Data can be shared, archived, reprocessed or converted to other formats using these files.

Technically, a JCAMP-DX/JDX file is a plain-text (ASCII) file made up of labelled data records (LDRs), each starting with a double hash ("##LABEL=…") giving field names and values. A typical file begins with fields like ##TITLE, contains keywords such as ##JCAMP-DX= (version), ##DATA TYPE= and then numerical spectral or peak-table data. Compression schemes (e.g. AFFN, PAC, SQZ) may be used for the numerical values. One signature is the ASCII string "##TITLE" at the start of file.
