Opening INF files

Did your computer fail to open an INF file? We explain what INF files are and recommend software that we know can open or convert your INF files.

What is an INF file?

The INF file format was developed as a plain text format by Microsoft. These .inf files are also known as setup information files, and these are used for Windows applications, device drivers and firmware components of Windows installations. When a user downloads a device driver installer or a Windows application installation package, an INF file is normally included. These INF files are also included in installation packages of most firmware updates and upgrades for Windows PCs.

The data stored in these .inf files are normally details in plain text format, which are used by the installers of Windows applications, hardware devices and firmware components. These details are normally directory locations of required resources, installation folders and files. When these .inf files are bundled with installers of device drivers and firmware updates or upgrades, these details may contain device configurations, default settings and status logs.

These INF files may also contain information about the software, device driver or firmware component. These are usually installer creation and release date, version number and developer among other details. These .inf files can be opened using standard text editing applications like Notepad.

Try a universal file viewer

In addition to the products listed above, I would suggest that you try a universal file viewer like Free File Viewer. It can open over 200 different types of files - and very likely yours too! Download Free File Viewer.
