IGS File - opening and understanding
Did your computer fail to open an IGS file? We explain what they are used for and recommend software that we know can open or otherwise handle your .IGS files.
What is an IGS file?
Files that contain the .igs file extension are most commonly associated with 2D and 3D vector graphic images. The IGS file format is based on the IGES (Initial Graphics Exchange Specification) standard. This standard is used by a variety of CAD (computer aided drawing) applications.
IGS files are saved in a text-based ASCII format. This allows for the saving and exporting of vector data. The IGS format has become the standard file format for transferring 3D model files between different CAD programs. This allows a user who has created a model file in one application to send it to a user who does not have that same software program without worrying about whether or not the recipient will be able to open the file.
