IGS File
What are IGS files and how to open them
Are you having problems opening an IGS file or just wondering what they contain? We explain what these files are used for and show you software that we know can open or otherwise handle your files.
What is an IGS file?
IGS files have multiple uses, and Initial Graphics Exchange Specification (IGES) Data is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.
Initial Graphics Exchange Specification (IGES) Data
Files that contain the .igs file extension are most commonly associated with 2D and 3D vector graphic images. The IGS file format is based on the IGES (Initial Graphics Exchange Specification) standard. This standard is used by various CAD (computer-aided design) applications.
IGS files are saved in a text-based ASCII format. This allows for the saving and exporting of vector data. In addition, the IGS format has become the standard file format for transferring 3D model files between different CAD programs. This allows a user who has created a model file in one application to send it to a user who does not have that same software program without worrying whether the recipient will be able to open the file.
