What is a GXF file?

General EXchange Format Video

General EXchange Format video files are a video container format used in professional television systems for transporting or staging finished video clips and commercials between editing, storage, and playout systems. They are used mainly by broadcasters and media facilities, not for consumer or post-production editing. Common video compression methods in these files are MPEG, Motion JPEG (MJPEG), or DV-based formats. Audio data, time-code, and metadata (including user-defined metadata) are included.

Files in this format are created by video systems (for example those made by Grass Valley Group) or broadcast servers when content needs to be transferred, archived, or prepared for air. They are read by playout servers, editing systems (in limited contexts), archiving systems, and tools adhering to the SMPTE 360M or SMPTE RDD 14-2007 standards. The format supports cut-only edits, audio fades, and simple video compositions; complex transitions or effects are not supported.

Files begin with a specific byte signature: the sequence 0x0000000001BC at offset 0, followed by the bytes 0x00000000E1E2 at offset 10.
