All known file formats using extension .GBR
While GameBoy Sound System GBR Dump is a popular type of GBR-file, we know of 4 different uses of the .GBR file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.
Gerber PCB Design
Gerber PCB Design files (extension .GBR) hold PCB (printed circuit board) layer data in the Gerber image format, the standard language used by PCB design tools to pass layout designs to manufacturers. Each .GBR file describes a single 2-dimensional layer of the board - such as copper circuits, solder mask masks, silkscreen legends, or mechanical outlines - not the entire PCB. Designers export them after layout is complete so fabricators know exactly where to etch copper, drill holes, or apply masks.
The files are produced by PCB CAD or EDA software, which writes commands in ASCII text according to the Gerber specification (such as RS-274X or newer revisions) to define aperture shapes, drawing, and flashing operations for features like pads and traces. These files are then read by Gerber viewers (such as GerbV), or by the CAM systems in fabrication shops, to render, inspect, verify, and generate tools for each layer during the manufacturing process.
Technically each file conforms to the Ucamco Gerber Layer Format Specification: the format is human-readable text in UTF-8, contains embedded commands for geometry, attributes (metadata), and aperture definitions, and operates using a fixed set of operators defined in the standard. It is a vector format so that features are precisely defined rather than pixel-based.
