What are DSM files and how to open them

What is a DSM file?

DSM files have multiple uses, and DeSmuME Movie capture is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

DeSmuME Movie capture

These DSM files contain the movies captured in DeSmuMe, a Nintendo DS emulator. It uses a text-based file format, meaning you can edit and splice movies with ease.

How to open DSM files

Important: Different programs may use files with the DSM file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your DSM file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

While DeSmuME Movie capture is a popular type of DSM-file, we know of 3 different uses of the .DSM file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

Digital Sound Interface Kit module

These DSM files were used to store audio played in DSIK, a digital sound interface kit software. These files are usually extracted from a games resource file.

Dynamic Studio Professional Module

We know that one DSM format is Dynamic Studio Professional Module. We have not yet analyzed in detail what these files contain and what they are used for. We're working on it.
