What are DIC files and how to open them

How to open DIC files

Important: Different programs may use files with the DIC file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your DIC file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

While we have not verified the apps ourselves yet, our users have suggested ten different DIC openers which you will find listed below.

All known file formats using extension .DIC

While ATOK Dictionary is a popular type of DIC-file, we know of 9 different uses of the .DIC file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

DICOM Medical Imaging Bitmap

The DICOM Medical Imaging Bitmap format (.dic) is a medical image file that uses the DICOM standard. It bundles image data - such as CT scans, MRI, ultrasound or X-ray - with patient and study metadata, allowing both the image and its context to travel together in a single file. This format supports high-precision image data, often in grayscale with more than the 8 bits per pixel typical of consumer image formats, so diagnostic features can be adjusted (for example through windowing) after the scan.

Creators of .dic (DICOM) files are medical imaging devices and systems that conform to the DICOM standard published by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), such as scanners, imaging workstations, and Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS). Once created, these files are used by viewer software and clinical systems to display, analyze, or share medical images and associated metadata.

Technically, a .dic file formatted under DICOM Part 10 begins with a 128-byte preamble, followed by the four ASCII characters "DICM" at offset 128, then metadata elements and image-pixel data. The pixel data may be uncompressed or compressed using formats allowed by DICOM (such as JPEG, JPEG 2000, or RLE), depending on the device and settings.

IBM Ink Manager Dictionary

We know that one DIC format is IBM Ink Manager Dictionary. We have not yet analyzed in detail what these files contain and what they are used for. We're working on it.

Kingsoft PowerWord Dictionary

Files that contain the .dic file extension are most commonly associated with software dictionary files. These files contain a list of words referenced by various computer applications, including Kingsoft PowerWord, to spell-check user-created documents.

Microsoft Pocket IME Dictionary

We know that one DIC format is Microsoft Pocket IME Dictionary. We have not yet analyzed in detail what these files contain and what they are used for. We're working on it.

MindReader Dictionary

We know that one DIC format is MindReader Dictionary. We have not yet analyzed in detail what these files contain and what they are used for. We're working on it.

SMDIC Dictionary

We know that one DIC format is SMDIC Dictionary. We have not yet analyzed in detail what these files contain and what they are used for. We're working on it.

SpellGuard Dictionary

We know that one DIC format is SpellGuard Dictionary. We have not yet analyzed in detail what these files contain and what they are used for. We're working on it.

XDict Dictionary

We know that one DIC format is XDict Dictionary. We have not yet analyzed in detail what these files contain and what they are used for. We're working on it.
