What are DFONT files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a DFONT file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your DFONT files.

What is a DFONT file?

A .DFONT file is a Macintosh OS X Data Fork Font file.

Macintosh OS X Data Fork Font files are legacy TrueType font files used by early/macOS systems. They bundle font data entirely inside the file's "data fork" (rather than a separate "resource fork") to ensure compatibility with the Unix-based file system used by macOS. System fonts like Helvetica, Courier, Monaco, Times, ZapfDingbats and similar ones were often distributed in this format.

These fonts are created and managed by Apple's system font tools - for example Font Book - and are read by the operating system's font rendering engine when displaying or printing text. Though they contain TrueType outlines and other core sfnt tables like cmap, maxp, name, post, etc., DFONT files are considered legacy; modern systems favor standard .ttf or .otf formats.

Internally the file includes required TrueType tables such as 'cmap' (character-to-glyph mapping), 'maxp' (maximum profile), 'name' (naming), and 'post' (PostScript info), all stored in its data region. It often begins with a version value 0x00010000 and includes other identifying bytes near the start.
