DFRM File
What are DFRM files and how to open them
Are you having problems opening a DFRM file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your DFRM files.
What is a DFRM file?
A .DFRM file is a Fox Engine DeForm file.
Fox Engine DeForm files store meshes' deformation information used to customize character avatars in games made with the Fox Engine. They describe how certain parts of a character model should deform - such as facial features or body shapes - enabling avatar appearance variation beyond base meshes. These files are not the visual textures or skeletal motion data themselves but parameters that modify meshes under different avatar customization settings.
These files are created and read by the Fox Engine (used in games like Metal Gear Solid V), often packaged inside Fox Package archives (FPK) with other avatar assets. They integrate with model files (.fmdl) and material or variation files (.fv2, .fova) so that as users choose different avatar options (skin type, facial structure, body shape), the engine applies the deformation data to adjust the mesh accordingly. DeForm files are usually paired with character model assets and are essential for avatar editors or custom character creators in such games.
Files begin with a four-byte ASCII signature "DFRM" at the very start of the file, indicating that the file contains deformation data and allowing tools and the engine to recognize it.
