What are DFM files and how to open them

How to open DFM files

Important: Different programs may use files with the DFM file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your DFM file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

While we have not verified the apps ourselves yet, our users have suggested ten different DFM openers which you will find listed below.

All known file formats using extension .DFM

While Avatar Studio Deformations is a popular type of DFM-file, we know of 3 different uses of the .DFM file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

Delphi / C++ Builder Form

Delphi / C++ Builder Form files save the layout and design-time properties of a user interface form - such as its controls, their positions, visual styles, and captions - for applications built with Embarcadero Delphi or Borland C++Builder. When you build a GUI program with these tools, each form you design in the IDE is described in its own ".dfm" file alongside the code file (for Delphi, a .pas file; for C++ Builder, .cpp/.h files). The DFM file does not contain the executable logic but only describes what the form looks like and how its components are configured at design time.

Forms are edited visually in the IDE's Form Designer. Editing in the visual mode automatically updates the corresponding .dfm file. Developers can also view and edit .dfm files as text, particularly when version control or code review is used. The system supports two storage formats for .dfm files: a human-readable (text) form, and a more compact binary form. The choice between binary and text format is configurable and both are used when designing applications. When building a project, data from .dfm files is compiled or embedded so that the resulting executable knows how to instantiate and arrange the form and its controls at runtime.

Technically, a binary .dfm file's header includes a signature made up of three specific bytes: 0xFF, 0x0A, 0x00. If those bytes don't appear there, the file is likely in its text form. The binary format is compatible across Delphi versions, and the IDE provides a "convert.exe" utility to translate between text and binary representations.
