DCS File
What are DCS files and how to open them
Are you having problems opening a DCS file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your DCS files.
What is a DCS file?
DCS files have multiple uses, and Camera RAW DCS Image File (Kodak) is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.
Camera RAW DCS Image File (Kodak)
Camera RAW DCS Image File (Kodak) is a proprietary raw photograph format produced by Kodak's DCS-series digital single-lens reflex cameras and digital backs. It stores minimally processed image data directly from the camera's sensor (often a Bayer-pattern colour filter array), preserving original exposure, white balance, and other capture settings. This allows photographers to apply adjustments later in software rather than having them baked into the image at the time of capture.
Kodak's DCS-series cameras write .DCS/.DCR files when set to shoot in RAW mode. These files are not intended for viewing or printing immediately; users generally convert them with Kodak's own software (such as DCS Capture Studio or DCS Photo Desk), or with raw-processing tools, into rasterized image formats like JPEG or TIFF. During conversion or "development," the RAW data is demosaiced (turning the Bayer mosaic into full-colour pixels), tone-mapped, and other settings (contrast, sharpening, etc.) are applied.
Internally the format is based on TIFF structure (TIFF/EP derivative). The RAW image data is usually stored losslessly compressed (using a JPEG-style compression) although some camera variants may store uncompressed sensor data. Files begin with the little-endian TIFF signature "II*
