What are CIB files and how to open them

What is a CIB file?

A .CIB file is a Card Image Backup Format file.

Card Image Backup Format files are created by the PhotoRescue program to make a full, bit-by-bit copy of the content of a memory card or external storage, including all data sectors even if some are damaged. These backups are made uncompressed and unencrypted in order to preserve absolutely every byte as originally read from the card, along with a small header. The format is mainly used when a card is behaving erratically or has suffered physical or logical corruption so that recovery can be performed safely on the image rather than repeatedly accessing the failing device.

PhotoRescue writes these backup files by selecting the "Backup Card" feature. The resulting image file has the same size as the storage device (plus the header) and can then be used as the source for recovery operations instead of working on the card itself. That reduces wear, risk of data loss, and speeds up subsequent recovery scans. DataRescue's DrDD tool (part of the same product family) can also create these images, using this format.

The format begins with a specific header signature: the first bytes are 3C 43 49 42 3E C1 B0 at offset zero (in ASCII ".CIB"). That signature helps tools like TrID recognize the file as this exact format.

How to open CIB files

Important: Different programs may use files with the CIB file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your CIB file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
