What are CDR files and how to open them

What is a CDR file?

CDR files have multiple uses, and CorelDraw Image is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

CorelDraw Image File

Files that contain the .cdr file extension most commonly contain computer drawings. These files are drawings that have been created with the popular CorelDRAW computer drawing application, although other Corel applications can also assign the .cdr file extension. CorelDRAW is Corel's computer graphics editor, and the CDR computer drawing format is proprietary to that software program.

While CorelDraw Image File is a popular type of CDR-file, we know of 3 different uses of the .CDR file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

Casio Graph100 ROMDISK Image

ROMDISK images for the Graph100 series are read-only storage images used by the Graph100 calculators' built-in RomDOS operating system to hold add-ins and utility files. These images are created by Casio when building the flash memory contents that the calculator boots into, and they allow the device to access embedded programs as if they were files in a disk-like file system.

Graph100's ROMDISK images are packages of application and utility EXE files, configuration data, icons, and internal files that are stored in ROM at manufacture or via add-in installers. The system treats them like a disk drive: folders and files inside ROMDISK are organized like in a FAT/DOS directory so the calculator's firmware can list them, load applications or libraries, and display associated icons.

Identification of a ROMDISK image is done by its unique header bytes at the very start of the file: the ASCII signature .(.DLRDISK appears at offset 0. Files of this exact format also use the extensions LEC or, alias, CDR/LEC. These signatures ensure that utilities which manage Graph100 flash memory or install add-ins correctly recognize ROMDISK image files.

While we have not verified the apps ourselves yet, our users have suggested ten different CDR openers which you will find listed below.

We know that one CDR format is Team F1 Data File. We have not yet analyzed in detail what these files contain and what they are used for. We're working on it.
