CAZ File

What are CAZ files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a CAZ file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your CAZ files.

What is a CAZ file?

CAZ files have multiple uses, and CAZIP compressed is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

CAZIP compressed file

These CAZ files are compressed files created in CAZIPXP, a data compression software. Data is compressed to make files smaller, often to save storage space and make it easier to distribute files over the internet.

How to open CAZ files

Important: Different programs may use files with the CAZ file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your CAZ file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

While we have not verified the apps ourselves yet, our users have suggested four different CAZ openers which you will find listed below.

All known file formats using extension .CAZ

While CAZIP compressed file is a popular type of CAZ-file, we know of 2 different uses of the .CAZ file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

CAZIPXP Compressed Archive

CAZIPXP Compressed Archive is a proprietary package format used by Broadcom's CA (formerly Computer Associates) software to deliver patches, diagnostic reports, and bundled utilities for Windows. It is created by Broadcom's CAZIPXP tool and serves as a self-contained archive of one or more files related to CA product maintenance or troubleshooting. These archives are commonly attached to cumulative update or rollup patch distributions, or generated by system diagnostic utilities to capture system state for support cases.

Creation of these archives happens during patch or diagnostic processes within CA products. These files are later uncompressed by the same utility, CAZIPXP, with a command-line instruction such as "cazipxp -u <archive_name>". Extracting reveals folders containing patch scripts, executables, log files, or other data needed to apply updates or debug issues.

The first five bytes of the file contain the ASCII string "CAZIP" starting at offset 0, serving as the format's signature. This distinguishes files of this format from unrelated uses of the same file extension.

Various apps that use files with this extension

These apps are known to open certain types of CAZ files. Remember, different programs may use CAZ files for different purposes, so you may need to try out a few of them to be able to open your specific file.
