What are CATROBAT files and how to open them

What is a CATROBAT file?

A .CATROBAT file is a Pocket Code/Catroid Catrobat Project file.

Pocket Code projects are container files used by the Pocket Code app (part of the Catrobat suite) to store complete visual programming-based projects, such as games, animations or interactive stories. These programs are created and edited within Pocket Code's IDE on Android or iOS, then saved in this format so they can be exported, shared or reloaded with all necessary code, assets and scenes bundled together.

When a project is saved in this format the logic of the program is serialized into an XML file named code.xml, which includes project metadata, a description of each scene and the blocks ("bricks") of code. All visual assets like images and audio used in those scenes are stored alongside in folders, one folder per scene, preserving original filenames. Pocket Code handles both writing and reading this project archive.

The project is a ZIP-archive under the name export, using the .catrobat extension. It begins with the standard PK ZIP magic number. Inside it must include at least code.xml and subdirectories for assets (images, sounds) often under folder names like IMAGES, SCENES etc., so that Pocket Code can fully reconstruct the scenes and their media.

How to open CATROBAT files

Important: Different programs may use files with the CATROBAT file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your CATROBAT file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
