What are BMM files and how to open them

What is a BMM file?

BMM files have multiple uses, and Bleeper Music Maker music is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

These BMM files contain music files created in Bleeper Music Maker, a program used to create music and play it through your PC speakers. The PC speakers could only support beep noises, but this program allowed for MIDI file playback. Bleeper has a built-in keyboard that you can use to make your own music.

How to open BMM files

Important: Different programs may use files with the BMM file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your BMM file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

While Bleeper Music Maker music is a popular type of BMM-file, we know of 2 different uses of the .BMM file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

Xilinx Block Memory Map

Xilinx Block Memory Map files define how internal block RAMs (BRAMs) on a Xilinx FPGA form a logical address space and how they are initialized. They are plain text files generated in FPGA design flows (such as Xilinx's EDK or Vivado) and used primarily by the tool Data2MEM to map software or data into the proper BRAM locations during device building or programming.

A BMM file assigns each block RAM instance into an Address Space, grouping them into Bus Blocks that reflect how a processor or bus masters access them. It links sections of logical memory (ranges of addresses) to specific BRAM hardware types (for example RAMB16, RAMB32, RAMB36, or generic MEMORY) and may include placement constraints (LOC or PLACED) that fix each BRAM's physical location. Data2MEM reads a BMM file together with an ELF or MEM file containing binary data and with the implemented design's bitstream, and uses the mapping to initialize the correct block RAMs. During design export, the write_bmm command can produce a BMM file (with placement info for implemented designs).

The syntax is human-readable, supports comments (using // or /…/), and is structured with uppercase keywords. Sections include ADDRESS_MAP (for naming the processor and memory controller), ADDRESS_SPACE (which specifies a named logical memory range and memory type), BUS_BLOCK (which groups several BitLane definitions), and Bit Lane entries specifying a BRAM instance name followed by a range like [start:end] and optional placement or output specifiers. Keywords such as END_ADDRESS_SPACE, END_BUS_BLOCK, RAMBxx, COMBINED, MEMORY appear in the text.

Internal identifiers include ASCII strings like ADDRESS_SPACE and END_BUS_BLOCK, and occur at predictable positions (for example "ADDRESS_" at offset 0 in many BMM files). These allow tools to detect and validate BMM semantics.
