What are BMML files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a BMML file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your BMML files.

What is a BMML file?

BMML files have multiple uses, and Braille Music Markup Language is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

Braille Music Markup Language File

The .bmml file extension is used for a source code and script file format that was developed to provide blind users with access to musical notation data. Also known as Braille Music Markup Language files, these BMML files store musical notation details in Braille characters and symbols. Through the Braille Music Reader, which was developed by Contrapunctus, these .bmml files can be viewed through the use of Braille devices like refreshable Braille display monitors.

Braille printing devices can also be used to print out these BMML files through the Braille viewer applications that are bundled with the Braille printers. Third-party Braille software products that can support the .bmml file format may also be used to print out these BMML files. The Braille Music Reader software can be used to open and view the content of these .bmml files. Other Braille programs can be used to edit the content of these BMML files.

All known file formats using extension .BMML

While Braille Music Markup Language File is a popular type of BMML-file, we know of 2 different uses of the .BMML file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

Balsamiq Mockups Prototype

Balsamiq Mockups Prototype files with the .BMML extension store mock‐up designs made in Balsamiq Mockups (also known as Balsamiq Wireframes). They are used when designing user interface layouts or sketching website and application screens in a low‐fidelity, rapid iteration context. These files define the positions and properties of UI elements - such as buttons, icons, text labels, containers, symbols - and are meant to be opened and edited with Balsamiq Mockups.

BMML files are XML documents authored by Balsamiq Mockups version 2. In version 3 and later, Balsamiq replaced BMML with a newer binary format (*.BMPR). However, tools in these later versions provide an import function so old BMML files can be brought forward into newer projects.
