BMF File

What are BMF files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a BMF file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your BMF files.

What is a BMF file?

BMF files have multiple uses, and Binary Managed Object is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

Binary Managed Object File

Binary Managed Object File format stores a compiled version of a Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) schema originally written in Managed Object Format (MOF). It is a binary form produced by the MOF compiler (mofcomp.exe) so definitions of classes, instances, events and methods can be embedded in drivers or resources rather than distributed as plain text. It serves WDM driver development and WMI provider registration, enabling faster load, validation, and deployment in system components.

Text MOF files define the shape of system management objects using a language derived from Interface Definition Language; these are compiled by mofcomp.exe to produce the binary form. When building a driver, the developer uses commands like "mofcomp - B:filename.bmf - WMI Example.MOF" so that the output is a .bmf file, which is then compiled into the driver's resource section and deployed to the WDM infrastructure. The utility Wmimofck.exe can consume the .bmf file to generate header files, test templates, or verify the binary definitions.

Files of this format begin with the ASCII signature "BMOF" at byte offset zero.

How to open BMF files

Important: Different programs may use files with the BMF file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your BMF file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

While we have not verified the apps ourselves yet, our users have suggested ten different BMF openers which you will find listed below.

All known file formats using extension .BMF

While Binary Managed Object File is a popular type of BMF-file, we know of 5 different uses of the .BMF file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

BMF bitmap

These BMF files contain the bitmap of digital images created in Corel applications, an image editor. Architectural programs like FloorPlan 3D use BMF. However, the Corel BMF format has never been released publicly, so there is not much information on BMF Bitmap.

ByteMap font format

These BMF files contain the fonts that were extracted from games and demoscene productions. Hundreds of fonts are drawn and pixelated by graphicians and artists that get lost or forgotten over time.

Corel Binary Material Format

These BMF files contain the bitmap of digital images created in several Corel applications. Architectural programs like FloorPlan 3D use BMF. However, the Corel BMF format has never been released publicly, so there is not much information on BMF Bitmap.

FloorPlan 3D Project

FloorPlan 3D Project files store the complete design of a home or landscape plan, including both its 2D layout and its 3D structure. It is the native project format used by IMSI/Design's FloorPlan (also known as TurboFLOORPLAN or FloorPlan Home & Landscape) software. These files preserve all aspects of a design - floor levels, walls, doors, windows, furniture, landscaping, textures, and camera/view settings - so that the project can be continued later in the same software.

The format is written by IMSI/Design's FloorPlan line of software. Users create and edit these project files during the course of designing floor plans, arranging interiors, landscaping, and rendering 3D views. When saved, the program preserves all project data so that the layout, 2D drawings, 3D models, materials, and user view settings are stored together. The file may be reopened later with the same or a compatible FloorPlan product where work can resume without loss of position, design layers, or view attributes.

The name FloorPlan 3D Project refers to the relationship between the 2D floor layout and the full 3D model of the design. Later versions of FloorPlan software allow exporting portions of the design (2D images, DXF/DWG for CAD parts, rendered 3D views, or media) but the project file itself is the one that holds everything needed to manage, edit, layer, and render the complete design.

Internally, these files begin with recognizable byte signatures including the ASCII text string "FloorPlan3D(cr:" (or more fully "FLOORPLAN3D (CR") near the start of the file. Another signature is all-zero bytes at the very start. These signatures distinguish the format from other uses of the same file extension.

Various apps that use files with this extension

These apps are known to open certain types of BMF files. Remember, different programs may use BMF files for different purposes, so you may need to try out a few of them to be able to open your specific file.
