What are BMD files and how to open them
Are you having problems opening a BMD file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your BMD files.
What is a BMD file?
A .BMD file is a Nintendo GameCube/Wii 3D Model file.
Nintendo GameCube/Wii 3D Model files store full three-dimensional models - including geometry, skeletons, materials and embedded textures - as used in Nintendo's GameCube and Wii first-party games built with the J3DGraph component of JSYSTEM. They serve to represent character and scene models in a format the console's rendering engine reads directly, supplying everything needed to display a rigged, textured 3D object during gameplay.
Models are produced by Nintendo's internal tools used in the development of GameCube and Wii titles, then packaged in game assets. Once in the game, they are loaded by the console's engine, which parses the model's sections such as scene hierarchy, vertex buffers, joint skeletons, shapes, materials, and textures. No external converter or runtime interpolation is required, as everything required for rendering - including skinning weights, draw calls, and TEV-style materials - is already defined.
Files begin with the ASCII magic string "J3D2bmd…" (identifying the J3DGraph Binary Model format) at offset zero. Big-endian encoding is used throughout, following PowerPC architecture conventions. version and loader revision numbers are encoded in the initial signature. The file comprises multiple named chunks such as INF1 (scene info), VTX1 (vertex data), JNT1 (joint/skeleton), SHP1 (shape/draw data), MAT3 (materials), TEX1 (textures), plus EVP1/DRW1 for skinning; a related format "BDL" adds an extra MDL3 section for hardware display lists.
Byte signature example: at offset 0 appears "J3D2bmd…" ("4A 33 44 32 62 6D 64 …") identifying this exact format's magic string.
