What are ASA files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening an ASA file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your ASA files.

What is an ASA file?

An .ASA file is an ArcGIS ArcScene Data file.

ArcGIS ArcScene Data files are animation track files used in the ArcGIS suite by Esri, specifically designed for storing camera movement and scene animation settings created within ArcScene. They allow users to define keyframes (camera positions and properties at certain times), paths, capture settings, and other motion parameters. These files enable the playback and reuse of 3D animations built with ArcScene in the same or different maps or scenes.

These files are saved by ArcScene when you use the Save Animation File command in the Animation toolbar. Once saved, the .asa file can be loaded into ArcScene (or other matching ArcGIS applications that support scene animations) to replay the camera track and animate the scene without needing to rebuild the path. Animation files in this format serve as independent templates or reusable motion tracks.

Technically, .asa files contain structured animation metadata rather than image or video frames. They include keyframes for camera position and other properties, layer references, and possibly paths or tracks for movement. They are identified by signatures such as the sequence of bytes D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B11AE1 at the beginning (offset 0) along with embedded strings like "ROOT ENTRY", "ANIMATION", and "CAMERA KEYFRAME 1".
