What is an AGS file?

An .AGS file is an Atari Graphics Studio Bitmap file.

Atari Graphics Studio Bitmap is a proprietary bitmap image format created for Atari Graphics Studio, used to store digitized or edited graphics on Atari systems. Such files are typically created when users draw, convert, or import artwork in Atari Graphics Studio, and saved in this format to preserve pixel data, palette, and exact layout for future editing or display on Atari-compatible hardware.

These bitmap files contain raster graphics data, including color palette information, pixel arrangement, and possibly display mode metadata specific to Atari graphics hardware. They are designed to be read by Atari Graphics Studio and similar tools that support the format - for instance, for loading into the editor, modifying the image, and then resaving or exporting in other formats compatible with Atari display modes.

As a technical identifier, the file begins with the ASCII signature "AGS" at offset 0 (hex bytes 41 47 53). That signature helps software recognize this exact format when examining file headers.

How to open AGS files
