AGR File

What are AGR files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening an AGR file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your AGR files.

What is an AGR file?

An .AGR file is a Grace Project file.

Grace project files are used by the Grace software, a WYSIWYG 2D plotting tool also known as xmgrace. They contain all the data, graph layouts, styling choices, annotations, and settings that define a complete plotting project. These files allow you to save your work in Grace and later reopen it to continue modifying the plot without needing to re-enter everything from scratch.

The program that creates these project files is Grace itself. When you begin a new plot, Grace starts with a default template project (often "Default.agr"), lets you import or enter datasets, change axes, formatting, colors, labels, scaling etc., and then Save to a project file. Later you can Open the saved project to restore graphs exactly as they were. These project files are editable via Grace's interface or through its scripting features.

Internally, files of this type start with the ASCII signature # Grace project file at byte offset 0. This header indicates that the file is a Grace project file.
