What are 2DA files and how to open them

What is a 2DA file?

A .2DA file is an Infinity Engine 2-Dimensional Array file.

Infinity Engine 2-Dimensional Array (.2DA) files are text-based tables used by Infinity Engine games to store rule data such as experience progression, weapon proficiencies, soundsets or animation mappings. They organize game logic and configuration in rows and columns so that each row corresponds to a defined item, level, or entity, and each column holds an attribute or statistic used by the game.

The files are typically created and edited by game designers and modders working with the BioWare Infinity Engine. The engine reads these files during loading to apply game rules and behaviours. Users often modify 2DA files to tweak how the game works (for example changing XP needed per level or adjusting character abilities). These files may also be encrypted in some game releases.

Technically, each .2DA file version 1.0 begins with a header line "2DA V1.0" (possibly preceded by whitespace), followed by a "default value" line, then a line of column headings, followed by rows of data. Cells without a value use the default value. Files are white-space separated so values cannot contain spaces. In encrypted versions, the first two bytes are 0xFF. The signature "2DA V1.0" at offset zero identifies unencrypted files.

Important: Different programs may use files with the 2DA file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your 2DA file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
