Z01 File

Did your computer fail to open a Z01 file? We explain what they are used for and recommend software that we know can open or otherwise handle your .Z01 files.

What is a Z01 file?

Files that contain the .z01 file extension store a volume that has been split from a compressed archive file. When WinZip, a file compression and archiving utility, creates an archive in order to compress large files or multiple files into one single archive folder, the resulting archive file can be broken down into separate volumes.

Breaking an archive file into smaller files makes it easier to transfer the files over the Internet. Each volume of the split file archive is given its own individual file extension, such as .z01, .z02, .z03, etc. Files with the .z01 file extension normally contain the first volume of the split archive file.

In order to extract the files contained in a split archive file, each of the individual volume files must be present.
