What is an XLF file?
An .XLF file is an XML Localization Interchange File Format file.
The XML Localization Interchange File Format (XLIFF) is an XML-based file format created for the localization and internationalization of software. It is an open standard developed by the OASIS international consortium, and it is an interchangeable format to carry translatable content along with its associated metadata between CAT (Computer-Assisted Translation) tools and localization environments.
XLIFF files are designed to make it easy to localize software and other content, by separating the translatable text from the source code and program-specific formatting. This allows translators to focus on the text, while developers can continue working on the program without interruption. XLIFF files are also designed to handle various type of translatable content, like plain text, html, rtf, or xml.
XLIFF is widely supported by localization software vendors and is used in many software development and localization workflows. Because of the flexibility of the format, it can be integrated into many types of development environment, like java, .net, android or iOS. The format is also used in different industry, like automotive, oil&gas, e-commerce, and many more.
