What is a WMP file?

Infinity Engine World Map

The .WMP file extension pertains to the Infinity Engine, a highly regarded game engine developed by BioWare that was utilized in the creation of numerous classic role-playing games such as Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale. These files house the data for the game's world map, including information on the location and appearance of various areas, as well as any events or encounters that may occur there.

It is worth noting that these files are amenable to modification by players, a process referred to as modding. Modding allows players to alter the game world by adding new locations to the map or modifying the appearance of existing ones, resulting in a more personalized and distinctive gaming experience. However, it is advisable to make a copy of the original files prior to making any modifications, as there is a potential for unintended consequences to arise.
