What is a WDP file?

WDP files have multiple uses, and Microsoft HD WDP Photo is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

Microsoft HD WDP Photo File

Microsoft HD WDP Photo File is a still-image file format for high-resolution photographs developed by Microsoft under the name Windows Media Photo and later renamed HD Photo. It stores continuous-tone image data using either lossy or lossless compression, supports high dynamic range and precision color formats, and is designed to allow efficient decoding of sub-regions or reduced resolutions. Files with the .wdp extension are typically created by programs or features in Windows that use the Windows Imaging Component (WIC) codec for HD Photo.

These files are produced when an application saves an image using Microsoft's HD Photo codec or when image data is embedded in a document format that supports it, such as PowerPoint (.pptx). After creation, .wdp images can be viewed, edited, converted, or included in documents using software that supports the HD Photo / JPEG XR standard.

In binary form, these files begin with a signature in the first four bytes: 0x49 0x49 0xBC 0x01, which marks them as little-endian format ("II" header) and identifies them distinctly from standard TIFF, which uses 0x2A in that position.
