Files with the .wax extension are most commonly used by the Windows Media player. The WAX files contain a shortcut to a WMA file located on the Internet. The WAX file does not contain the actual audio file. Only a reference to the location of the Internet file. When a user clicks the associated icon on the desktop, the WAX file will launch the audio file on the user's computer as long as the computer is connected to the Internet.
The .wax file extension is also used for ProComm Plus compiled script files, Audio advanced streaming format files and VUPlayer playlist files.
