How to open UFO files

Important: Different programs may use files with the UFO file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your UFO file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

While Ellisys Visual USB Data is a popular type of UFO-file, we know of 2 different uses of the .UFO file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

Ulead PhotoImpact Object(s)

Ulead PhotoImpact Object files with extension UFO are the native, editable image files created by Ulead PhotoImpact. They preserve everything in your working file: the original base image plus any objects you add - a text layer, graphics, or paths. When you open a UFO in PhotoImpact you can move, modify or delete individual objects without affecting the base image.

These files are produced when you work in object mode with PhotoImpact and choose "Save" or "Save As" in the UFO format. Once saved, you can re-open the file in PhotoImpact and continue editing all parts separately. If you export or save in a common bitmap format like JPEG or BMP, all the objects get merged into one flat image, losing the ability to edit them individually. UFO supports advanced features like 48-bit color images.

UFO files always begin with a file signature characteristic of Microsoft's OLE Compound File format ("D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1 …") at offset zero. Inside the file you'll often find recognizable object names: "L.T.F.PREVIEWIMAGE", "LTFHEADER", and "OBJECT", among others.
