What is a TZ file?
TZ files have multiple uses, and Compressed TAR is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.
Compressed TAR file
Files with the .tz file extension are often Unix TAR archive files that have been compressed with the Unix "compress" command to reduce the size. More often users name the files .tar.z instead of .tz.

While Compressed TAR file is a popular type of TZ-file, we know of 2 different uses of the .TZ file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.
TimeZone Data
We know that one TZ format is TimeZone Data. We have not yet analyzed in detail what these files contain and what they are used for. We're working on it.
