Did your computer fail to open a TEC file? We explain what they are used for and recommend software that we know can open or otherwise handle your .TEC files.
What is a TEC file?
A .TEC file is a PDP-10 TECO Macro file. Files that contain the .tec file extension are commonly used for PDP-10 TECO macro files. These files were created for the PDP-10 mainframe computers that were manufactured by DEC.
PDP-10 stands for Programmed Data Processor Model 10. A variety of universities used these machines in their research labs and computing facilities. These computers were most popular from 1963 through 1966.We have not yet verified any programs for Windows that work with this specific file format. If you know one, please use the 'Suggest a program' link below. Thanks!
What else are .TEC files used for?
While PDP-10 TECO Macro is a popular type of TEC-file, we know of 3 different uses of the .TEC extension.
The TEC file extension indicates to your device which app can open the file. However, different apps may use the same file extension for different types of data. So a TEC opener may not be able to open all kinds of TEC files. In this case, look through all formats to make sure you find the best suited TEC viewer.
TECkit compiled mapping
The TECkit software also uses the .tec file suffix. TECkit is an acronym for Text Encoding Conversion toolkit. The TEC files that are used by this software contain a compiled version of the text mappings that are saved in the software's MAP files.
Ledit layout data
The Tanner Ledit software application also uses the .tec file format. These TEC files contain layout technology data files that are used by the Tanner Ledit program.
Various TEC file openers, viewers, etc.
These apps are known to open certain types of TEC files. Remember, different programs may use TEC files for different purposes, so you may need to try out a few of them to be able to open your specific file.
