What is a TAK file?

A .TAK file is a TAK Lossless Compressed Audio file.

TAK Lossless Compressed Audio files are audio recordings compressed without losing any sound quality using the TAK codec (short for Tom's lossless Audio Kompressor), developed by Thomas Becker. These files contain digital audio originally in uncompressed PCM form (for example WAV), which has then been losslessly compressed so that the audio is exactly preserved while the file size is reduced. The format supports tag metadata and optional additional data like album art or checksums, making it suitable for archival and high-resolution music listening.

TAK files are produced by Becker's official encoder tools, which include both graphical and command-line versions for Windows, along with a decoder library and SDK for integration in other software. Once created, TAK files can be decoded for playback or converted back to uncompressed PCM or other audio formats for compatibility. The architecture supports multi-threaded encoding, full reliability (stream is lossless), optional MD5 checksums for verifying content integrity, and supports channels up to six and bit depths including 8, 16, and 24 bits per sample.

Inside the file, audio data is preceded by a small signature and a metadata section. The beginning of the file starts with the ASCII header tBaK. The metadata area includes required stream information (such as codec version, sample rate, sample bits, number of channels), optional parts like encoder profile, internal checksums, tagging (APEv2), and RIFF chunks when reconstructing WAV files. Frames of compressed audio data follow, each with its own header including synchronization word (0xA0FF in little-endian), flags, frame number, sample count, CRC, and other frame-specific information.
