RoboHelp Synonym File

RoboHelp Synonym List files store synonym definitions used in Adobe RoboHelp help-authoring projects so that end users can find relevant help topics by searching with different words of the same meaning. They let the help author map words that people might use interchangeably (for example "cursor," "pointer," "mouse") so the search feature returns content containing any of those words. These files are generated per language in a RoboHelp project.

These files are created by the help author during project setup or edited when refining search behavior. When RoboHelp builds output (for example WebHelp or HTML Help), it uses the synonym list to influence how search results are selected and highlighted. The author can add, edit, or delete synonym sets for each language. RoboHelp pairs these files with other language-specific search control files like the stop list (.STP).

Technically, a .SYN file is a plain-text file (not binary) that is part of the RoboHelp project's XML metadata. It is stored alongside other project files under the project's language folder (for example English-US.syn). Editors like Notepad can open it. It is structured so that each synonym set groups together words that are considered equivalent in searches.
