Important: Different programs may use files with the SMP file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your SMP file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

While we have not verified the apps ourselves yet, our users have suggested ten different SMP openers which you will find listed below.

SmartMusic Performance

SmartMusic Performance (.SMP) is a legacy proprietary file format developed by MakeMusic for use with SmartMusic and Finale notation software, designed to enable interactive music practice and assessment. It bundles together MIDI accompaniment sequences and notation (musical score information) so that students can play along while SmartMusic follows their tempo in real time rather than using a fixed metronome speed.

These files are typically authored in Finale versions circa 2006 through 2012, when the software could export .SMP files for use with classic SmartMusic. .SMP files supported a variety of use cases: solo performances, solo performances with accompaniment, ensemble parts where users could mute or enable certain parts, and assessment exercises. As of Finale v26.1 (released May 6, 2019), existing .SMP and its successor format .SMPX can be converted to newer SmartMusic-compatible formats (e.g. SMZ via MusicXML) because cloud-based SmartMusic no longer supports the older .SMP and .SMPX files directly.

Internally .SMP files are binary, proprietary containers with embedded notation markers, accompaniment data, and metadata such as title, composer, copyright, instrument assignments, and possibly GUIDs. One identifying signature is the ASCII text "smph" at offset 0 and "smpt" at offset 14, along with strings like "SMARTMUSIC SOFTSYNTH", "MAKEMUSIC INC." and "FINALE SMP".
