What is a SMK file?

A .SMK file is a Smacker Video file.

Smacker Video File is a proprietary multimedia file format created by RAD Game Tools (now Epic Games Tools) in 1994. It holds a video track compressed using an 8-bit (256-color) adaptive RGB palette, and up to seven audio tracks which may be mono or stereo, 8-bit or 16-bit. It was commonly used for in-game full-motion video and animated cutscenes during the era when hardware and displays were limited to 256 colors.

Files with this extension are produced by tools in the RAD Video Tools suite using the Smacker compressor. The files are decoded by Smacker players or converted or played by media tools that implement the Smacker specification. Smacker has largely been replaced by its successor format Bink for modern true-color video use, but is still used for legacy or low-resource applications.

A Smacker file always begins with a four-byte ASCII signature, either SMK2 or SMK4, to identify the version.
