What are SMCD files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a SMCD file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your SMCD files.

What is a SMCD file?

A .SMCD file is a SMCDraw Drawing file.

SMCDraw Drawing files (".SMCD" extension) are created by the SMCDraw program from SMC for designing pneumatic circuit diagrams. They hold diagrams built from a library of pneumatic equipment symbols - each symbol corresponds to a product part number. SMCDraw is used to assemble these diagrams by drag-and-drop, connect piping automatically via equipment ports, and generate a parts list alongside the visual layout. The diagrams can later be exported or printed in formats such as DXF or other graphics when needed.

When working with SMCD files, users typically first launch SMCDraw, build or edit the pneumatic circuit using symbols from its symbol library, connect parts using piping tools, set layout properties, then save the work. The saved *.SMCD file retains all diagram data, part-library references, symbol positions, and connectivity until the user chooses to export into graphic or CAD formats for sharing or further use.

Technical header or format specification details for SMCD files (such as exact file signature bytes, internal field names or version schema) are not publicly documented.
