SITE File
What are SITE files and how to open them
Are you having problems opening a SITE file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your SITE files.
What is a SITE file?
A .SITE file is a GoLive Website Project file.
The GoLive Website Project format (extension .site) is a project file used by Adobe GoLive to represent an entire website being developed. It holds metadata about the site's structure - such as pages, images, links, errors, settings, stylesheets, scripts - but does not include the actual content files themselves. The .site file serves as the central manifest for a website project in GoLive, recording what files go where, how pages connect, and what global settings apply.
Adobe GoLive produces .site files when you create or open a website project. The file is saved at the root of that project's folder along with other project resource subfolders (for example folders for CSS, images, "aglextra," etc.). If you lose the main .site file or it becomes corrupted, GoLive also creates backup versions named like ProjectName Backup.site. Users work through the .site file inside GoLive to manage their site: editing page content, adding or removing assets, configuring palettes, components, layout and structure, then publishing as needed.
The .site file is in a proprietary binary (or mixed‐binary/text) format specific to Adobe GoLive, not a simple XML or plaintext project file. It can be identified by certain internal byte signatures or strings - e.g. ASCII signatures like "GoPjGoMk", "mBIN", or strings such as SITEENTRY, EXTERNALS, INDEX.HTML, COMPONENTS, SMARTOBJECTS among others - at specific offsets.
