SIT files are archive files that have been created by the StuffIt software application by Smith Micro. It is a common file format that is used to compress files on Macintosh computers. This allows users to take large volumes of files or single files with a large file size and compress the file or files into a single file archive.
SIT files are very like ZIP files in that they compress and archive multiple files and folders within a single file archive, however SIT files were primarily only used on Mac operating systems.
Nowadays SIT files can be used on both Mac and Windows computers as the StuffIt software has been made available for both platforms.
