What is a SCM file?

ScreenCam Video

ScreenCam acts like a video camera for your computer desktop, recording the actual events that are occurring on the screen of the computer so that the video can be played back at a later point in time.

The SCM files that are captured by the ScreenCam software contain the video that has been recorded with the software application. The recordings are often used to share tutorials or computer gaming sessions with other people.

StarCraft Map

StarCraft Map (.SCM) files define playable maps for the original StarCraft game by Blizzard Entertainment. Players and map creators use the StarEdit Scenario Editor (sometimes called StarEdit) to place terrain, units, starting locations, triggers, musica or sounds, and decorative "doodads" into a scenario, and then save all of this into an .SCM file (extension .SCM for the base game, .SCX for Brood War and expansion maps).

Internally, an .SCM file is a compressed archive using Blizzard's MPQ (Mo'PaQ) format. One of the files inside the MPQ archive is scenario.chk, which holds a CHK-formatted set of "chunks" each with its own name and size. These chunks encode map dimensions, terrain data, player race setup, string tables (for map names, trigger texts, etc.), triggers (conditions and actions), and other metadata needed by StarCraft to run the scenario.

The file begins with MPQ archive signatures. Specifically at offset zero are the bytes "MPQ\x1A\0\0\0\0" (ASCII "MPQ" followed by 0x1A and four zero bytes) which identify it as an MPQ archive.
