RSO File

What are RSO files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a RSO file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your RSO files.

What is a RSO file?

A .RSO file is a LEGO NXT Brick Audio file.

LEGO NXT Brick Audio files are custom sound files created by LEGO for use with the Mindstorms NXT brick. They store short audio clips such as beeps, alerts, and basic sound effects that can be loaded onto the NXT and triggered by its programs. These files are useful when you want your NXT robot to provide audible feedback or cues during operation.

These RSO sound files are produced from WAV files using conversion tools provided by LEGO or third-party utilities. Once converted, the RSO files are uploaded into the NXT brick's storage via the Mindstorms NXT software or through development tools like LabVIEW or RobotC. Within NXT programs you can play them using sound playback functions, for example the sound must be in valid RSO format to be used with NXTSoundPlayFile or related system calls.

Internally, RSO files are binary audio data in the LEGO NXT sound file format. According to the official executable file specification for firmware 1.28 and software 2.0, files with the .RSO extension are categorized under "Sound files." The NXT firmware's file format specification confirms that .RSO is distinct from tone or built-in sounds and is meant for external sound files.

In encoded form, these files begin with two particular byte sequences: at offset 0 the byte 0x01 00, and at offset 4 the bytes 0x1F 40 00 00 (which correspond in ASCII to ".@" starting at that location).
