What is a RMX file?

A .RMX file is a RealMedia Secure Clip file.

RealMedia Secure Clip (.RMX) is a digital audio file format used by RealNetworks for audio clips that are protected with digital rights management (DRM). It is created when a user chooses to encode their audio as a protected RealAudio file - for example within RealJukebox (or later RealPlayer) by selecting the "RealAudio (Secure)" option. The file is intended for playback only on authorized devices or with valid decryption credentials tied to the user or device.

Files with .RMX are produced by RealNetworks' software. Once created, they may be played by RealPlayer or compatible components that respect the RealNetworks DRM scheme, but they cannot be used like ordinary audio files until they are decrypted according to the rights embedded in the file. The format prevents unauthorized copying or transfer unless the necessary licensing or keying is present.

Technically, .RMX files begin with the ASCII signature ".RMX". Internally they include metadata fields like DECRYPTIONPROVIDER, SESSIONKEY, BACKUPKEY, CYPHERTYPE, CFormat (FILEMIMETYPE), BITRATE, CHANNELS, FORMAT, CSPNAME, CSPCONTAINERNAME, and markers like ZYS001. These fields manage the DRM, audio format, and playback constraints and distinguish the file as secure RealMedia content. Known software that works with .RMX includes PowerDVD among others.
