What is a RGSS3A file?
A .RGSS3A file is a RPG Maker VX Encrypted Archive file.
RPG Maker VX Ace creates a file named using the .rgss3a extension when exporting a game with its "encrypted archive" option enabled. It packages most game assets - such as graphics, audio, maps, and compiled Ruby scripts - into one archive (usually Game.rgss3a) so the game runtime can load all content from inside rather than from separate files. Its main purpose is to simplify deployment and deter casual editing.
During deployment, RPG Maker VX Ace (produced by Enterbrain, now Kadokawa) writes this archive. The game engine reads it at runtime via its internal library (RGSS3), treating the archived assets as if they were ordinary files in the game's folders. Users often extract assets from .rgss3a for modding or translation using open-source tools built for that purpose.
The file begins at offset zero with the ASCII signature "RGSSAD" followed by byte 0x00 then version byte 0x03, identifying it as the RGSSAD version 3 archive used by VX Ace.
