What are RCL files and how to open them

What is a RCL file?

RCL files have multiple uses, and Recolored Project is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

Recolored Project

Recolored Project files with the .RCL extension store image-recoloring projects created by the Recolored application from Bertheussen IT. These files capture an ongoing work session: the original source image plus the user's applied color layers or masks and the parameters defining how colors have been changed or added. They let users save progress on a recoloring task and later resume editing.

Recolored writes .RCL files when a user starts or saves a project in the software. When reopened in Recolored, the file restores all color settings, adjustment layers, and mask or brush selections so that editing can continue exactly where it left off. Outside Recolored these files cannot be edited or applied directly as typical image files.

The format begins with a specific byte signature at the very start of the file: the ASCII header "RCLF" followed by a version value and then "BM". In hexadecimal this appears as "52 43 4C 46 01 00 00 00 02 00 00 00 42 4D" at offset 0, which helps identify this format among other .RCL-extension files.
